01. ONLINE COMPUTING DICTIONARY. An excellent reference site to
define computer terms and all manner of techno babble can be found at
http://www.InstantWeb.com/D/dictionary/index.html .

02. FAST MAIL. If you're in a hurry to create email while in your
Netscape or IE browser, just enter in the location box (where you would
normally enter a URL) "mailto:" without the quotes, followed by the
email address. If you have multiple addresses, separate each with a
command. This opens your email reader with addresses already inserted.

03. WHO'S BEEN LINKING TO YOU? Repeating a golden oldie, if you'd
like to know who has linked to your Web site, go to
http://www.altavista.com and enter "link:" without the quotes, followed
by your Web site address. This works only if the linking site is in
Alta Vista's database.

04. IT'S ABOUT TIME. Coordinated Universal Time or World Time that is.
They mean the same and this animated clock is accurate within 1 second,
something our computer clocks could never claim. This clock is at
http://www.time.gov/ and it's provided by joint effort of the National
Institute of Standards & Technology and the U.S. Naval Observatory.

05. ONLINE MEDICAL REFERENCE. The Merck Manual of Medical Information
is now available as a free resource at http://www.MerckHomeEdition.com .
The new version is complete with multimedia components such as videos,
animations, color photos, links, and pronunciations of medical terms.

06. ATTACK ON SPAM. Put spammers on notice to remove your address
from their list by going to http://www.e-mps.org . Does it work? Only
if the spammer (OK, we'll be nice and call them "marketer") is a member
of the Direct Marketing Association, constituting 4,500 U.S. companies
and 53 others. That means you'll then receive spam only from the other
five billion, surely a reassuring thought.

07. WEBKEY. A rather handy - and free - small utility, WebKey 2000,
can be found at http://webkey.virtualave.net/webkey.html . It does all
this with one-touch keyboard access and predefined hot keys: visit
your favorite Websites, launch your default email client using an email
template, execute applications, open documents, hide or show a series
of active windows on your desktop, execute an action command from the
clipboard buffer, or open a default browser.

08. ANOTHER PRINT SOLUTION. There are many ways to work around the
limitation of the PrintScreen key in Windows. It does nothing more
than save a screen image to the clipboard, and from there you have to
go to other applications to paste, edit, and print your image. As
long as you're having to go elsewhere, why not use the capabilities of
Adobe Acrobat Reader to spruce up the image before printing? If you
don't have Acrobat Reader on your system, it's a free and fast download
at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html . It installs
in your printer group an Acrobat PDF Writer.

While viewing the image in your browser, click File|Print and scroll to
Acrobat PDF Writer as the printer of choice. Click OK and a "Save PDF
File as" window opens. Scroll to the folder in which you wish to save
the file, and leave the file type as PDF files (*.PDF). Click OK and a
Document Information window opens. Complete the Subject and that will
become the file name. Click OK to save. You can then access the file
through Windows Explorer, click on it and Adobe opens it to print or
edit using any of Adobe's many features.

09. TRAY TOOLS 2000. This small utility places up to 24 favorite
programs in your tray. It's very simple to configure and a
free download at http://www.gregorybraun.com/TrayTool.html .

10. WEB UPDATE DISPLAY. You can find out when a Website was last
updated by entering the following in the address/location bar:
"javascript:alert(document.lastModified)" but omit the quotes.
This works in Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer
(versions 4 and higher)and Opera 5.

11. QUICK ROUTE TO ROOT DIRECTORY. A fast way to display the root
directory is: click on Start, Run, and type "\" without quotes in the
Run line. Click OK.

12. PERSONAL TOOLBAR INBOX. Netscape Communicator provides a Personal
Toolbar just below the navigation toolbar. This feature is handy for
those locations frequently visited. Since checking email is one of the
most frequent functions we perform, consider placing a shortcut to the
Inbox there as well. With both the email program and a browser page
open (you may need to adjust a bit to see them both), look for the icon
just to the left of the word Inbox. Click on the icon and, holding the
left mouse button, drag it to the Personal Toolbar and release. If
you want it identified by something other than "inbox" go to Bookmarks
and Edit Bookmarks. Under Personal Toolbar, select Inbox and right
click to select Bookmark Properties. Rename Inbox to whatever desired
and click OK. Of course, any mail folder can be placed on the Personal
Toolbar; in fact, place any link you wish there as well. It's a time
saver.

13. NEAT NET TRICKS PLUS. NNT will always be free; that's a promise
we made long ago. But soon there will be a second NNT publication
dealing with one topic per issue in-depth with no ads. It will cost
just $10 per year to charter subscribers, and, like the free NNT, it
will be distributed twice monthly. If you'd like a sample issue with
no obligation to subscribe, send a blank email to
nntplus-neatnettricks@silver.lyris.net .

14. NNT SURVEY. To make sure we get the information our readers find
most useful, it's necessary from time to time to conduct a survey. The
latest is at http://www.NeatNetTricks.com/survey/survey.htm and it will
take you only a few minutes to complete on-line. What do you get for
your efforts? (1) Our thanks; (2) A publication aimed as closely as
possible to our readers' interests; and, (3) A chance for more than
$100 worth of software in our drawing at the survey's conclusion if you
are subscribed to NNT and you leave your email address for prize
notification.
